"Swaziland: Culture and Religion Should Not Justify Gender Inequality" by Comfort Mabuza on 5 December 2013
Swaziland is the last African country to be an absolute monarchy. This leads to huge problems with gender equality in the political ranks of the districts which are ruled over by the monarchs. The country's women are in upheaval about the unfairness of gender inequality. Due to its deep cultural roots of Swaziland, they have not moved from the outdated system of an absolute monarchy. In the cultural aspects of things this can be a good thing, but not for the advancement of society.
An article on gender equality always gets juices flowing in all people. A bold suggestion such as calling an end to a certain area of culture is always something that worries me. There are however, things that can be done to keep true to some of the culture that the last remaining absolute monarchy holds.
This article is really a call for gender equality. Anytime gender equality is wanted, I am usually on board. However, this is not only a call for gender equality, but it also a clash with Swaziland's culture. Culture can bring people from even the farthest distance apart, together. This is not something that will completely crush Swaziland's culture, but it would eliminate a large part of it. If they would still keep the monarchy, just give women more rights, then that would be the best way to ensure both parties are happy.
